The winter is coming to a close and soon there will be plenty of fresh food available at your local markets. Taking advantage of fresh fruits, whole grains and vegetables is the best way to get your body ready for summer. One of the best pieces of advice is to shop around the "edges" of the grocery store, keeping away from the aisles which are full of canned and pre-packaged foods. Most of these items contain salt, preservatives and other unhealthy ingredients. If your shopping cart is mostly full of fresh produce and meats, you are already eating healthier than you think.
Adding whole natural grains such as brown rice, and quinoa are essential for maintaining blood sugar levels throughout the day. Whole grains are the best natural source of fiber which helps prevent diseases of the bowel. Quinoa is an excellent grain due to its high protein count and nutty flavor. Replacing water with organic, fat- free chicken or vegetable broth enhances the flavor and increases the nutritional value without adding calories. Take advantage of your local farmer’s markets also, they are the cheapest source for great produce. It might make for more trips to the grocery store, but this small time investment will pay huge dividends in your overall health and well being.
